Tiger Wood’s Apparel Sales Are Down. Is It The Philandering or the Poor Play?

By August 25, 2010Branding

He’s playing some of his worst golf, his wife divorced him.  Now his shirts aren’t selling!

Saw a report today from Bloomberg that said sales of Tiger Wood’s apparel are down 7.5% from last year while overall golf apparel is up 11%.  Is it the poor play or the philandering that has caused people to stop wanting to wear his shirts?

If Tiger returns to form and starts winning majors again and apparel sales rebound to their former level it will tell us that his personal values have no impact on his ‘fan’dom.

However if he does regain his playing form and apparel sales don’t come back it will tell us that men might be finding the clothing a little uncomfortable when they’re walking around the country club branded with such a well-known ‘cheater’.

What do you think?

Even if he starts playing well would his personal values may you less inclined to wear or buy his stuff?  Sure, there’s lots of examples of athletes who aren’t angels but there’s never been a scandal so public as this.

It will take Tiger Woods a long time to destroy the distrust.
